Roses or a Beer Analyzer?

A new relationship began on February 14, 2012, when the perfect Valentine’s Day gift arrived. For Erica Nelson, flowers and chocolate pale in comparison to an Anton Paar Beer Analyzer. Erica manages Quality Control/Quality Assurance at Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, NC. The Anton Paar catapults the capabilities of her department and Highland beer to world-class levels and she’s loving it.
Still the only one in a NC craft brewery, the Anton Paar takes up about as much room as a microwave and is a $60,000 investment in beer quality.
It has a modular design, with a base unit that measures specific gravity. The other modules measure alcohol, color and carbonation. In the future, the haze module may be added, which measures clarity.
“It calculates anything you want to know: ABV, original gravity, final gravity, apparent efficiency, real efficiency, apparent extract, real extract, and the number of calories in a 12 oz. bottle.” Much more information than the average beer drinker can see, smell or taste, but all required for exceptional quality. Erica has been happy to find that beer color is very consistent within each style. Carbonation levels have become more consistent thanks to the test she conducts on every batch of beer – every day during fermentation, several times in the packaging line, and in the final package. Erica exports data to Access and collaborates with brewers John Lyda and Joey Justice to look for trends and improvements to be made.
Bottles are enclosed in the explosion-proof base unit, then put under 85 pounds of pressure per square inch. The pressure is needed so that when cap is punctured by a metal straw, the beer is least affected from the change. The beer is analyzed right from the bottle.
Equipment this sophisticated “gives us the ability to further refine our processes for many years… This machine will take us as far we can go. We’re getting great information now, but it does so much more, and we will grow with it.”
Erica cleans and calibrates the machine almost every day for the most accurate readings – a labor of love that began on Valentine’s Day.

	ABOUT GALEN KIPAR PROJECT:

	Galen Kipar
compostion, vocals, guitar, harmonica
An artist from Augusta, Ga currently based in Asheville, NC. He is a graduate of Brevard College where he studied composition with Paul Elwood and majored in music with an emphasis in composition. His original music has grown to include compositions in the classical/20th century style for classical performers and ensembles, as well as his own unique style of music. In 2000, Galen co-founded the Greater Augusta Singer Songwriter Series and hosted acts like Jonny Irion and Sara Lee Guthrey for two years in an effort to help boost the Augusta music scene. In the past 14 years he has produced several live and studio albums with an array of other musicians. "I want people to feel everything...every feeling of life, the music should be like a roller coaster." He is dedicated to creating an honest, original sound that brings peace of mind, and to exploring creative process, tone, orchestration, and the development of music theory in general. "The process of writing a song can be like making breakfast for 15. It's like Tetris, it's like tug of war between left brain and right brain, it's like building a house on your own. You poke, jab, shift, rotate, retrograde, sequence, invert, slur, augment, smooth over, compromise, come to terms with ... until you can't anymore. Then, you take a break and do it again." He plays acoustic and classical guitars through a Roland Jazz Choras 120 with a Messa Boogie sub and Horner harmonicas. Otherwise...fly fisherman and guide, good cook, architectural draftsman, soccer coach, carpenter, jeep lover, trout ninja.

	Jeremy Young
Drums, percussion
Jeremy Young played his first gigs with Endangered Species in 1993 and various incarnations of different punk-rock bands in Kentucky and Indiana until 1995. He played in Bobby Fleet and his band With the Beat from 1996 to 1999 in Kentucky. Jeremy studied improvisation under John "Coach" Hamilton from 1996 to 1998 in Kentucky and played with guitarist Josh Durkee in Mr. Minor from 1998 to 2000. He studied percussion and Afro-Cuban rhythms under Byron Hedgepeth at UNCA from 2001 to 2004 in Asheville, NC. He performed with Miriam Allen in Red Mango from 2002 to 2004 in Asheville, NC. Jeremy co-founded Diagram of a Scam, an electro/jazz/jam trio in 2004 with long time collaborator Craig Lambert and released Product Recall EP in January 2005. He obtained a B.A. in Music from UNCA in 2010 with emphasis in Jazz studies and composition.

	Lyndsay PruettViolin/fiddle
Lyndsay Pruett, 26, is a violinist/fiddle player originally from Jacksonville, FL. Her father and grandfather are notable bluegrass musicians, but she insisted on seriously studying classical music as a child, attending Brevard Music Center and Eastern Music Festival and winning 2 concerto competitions before she was 18. In her college study at Belmont University in Nashville, she geared herself toward improvisation and studio work and set out to be able to play with anyone she was around. After graduating with a Commercial Violin Performance degree in Dec '06, she began playing with Futureman and the Black Mozart Ensemble, performing 2 times in India and in theatres all over the US. In 2008 her and a songwriter decided to get away from Nashville and spent 4 months as a folk troubadour all over the west coast, developing her original sound. In 2009, she made the move to Asheville for a change of pace and is playing in various local bands, working on a solo album, and teaching.

	Benjamin Portwood
Bass
Benjamin Portwood began studying the bass under the tutelage of Dr. Dennis Malmberg, at the Minneapolis South High School Music Conservatory in 1994, studying classical, jazz, ska-punk and funk in high school. He accompanied wind ensembles, choirs, jazz bands and pit orchestras, as well as playing with groups such as the Naked Professionals, the MITY Jazz Band, the Jose James Quintet, the Hoodlums. He co-produced the album Heavy Metal Vomit Party in 1999. He then went to school for sound design and recording engineering and spent some time composing music for radio commercials and producing 3 albums (Bendomuzak 5.0, Oldies but Goodies, and Love Looks for You). In 2006, as part of a thought experiment, he sold his recording studio and began playing only acoustic guitar and hand percussion. During this era, he played the triangle and the cheke-chekes in a group called Samba-Le, based out of Olot, Catalunya. In 2009, he began playing bass again with Elize Rosebach and her band of Bens. He lives in Asheville, NC and runs an Edible Landscaping business in his spare time.
http://www.pierceedens.com

Somewhere between the front porch and the garage, with a voice as strong as the lyrical content it is known to bellow, is Pierce Edens. With enough credentials to prove his status as both a leading songwriter and as a leading performer in the Southeast, the accolades still pile up from regional, national, and international reviews, critics, and fans. Receiving such praise as "a frenetic mix of rock-inspired carnival barker, part troubadour/part guitar-slinging vagrant" and "gritty, visceral and about as subtle as a flamethrower duel at a gas station, Pierce Edens and the Dirty Work are handily one of the defining bands in the current Asheville music scene" seemed a decent enough response. Then, after the release of their CD, constant rotation on several regional stations, and packed road-houses and dives, Edens and crew were voted one of the best Alt-Country bands of the area by Mountain Xpress readers...and then again by WNCW a few weeks later.

Growing up in rural western North Carolina - Madison County, to be more precise - Pierce was instantly inundated with the feral story-telling and musical ramblings of the area. The red clay ramblings soaked into his blood and became him. Since the early days of learning to play guitar (with a hand me down electric with the head stock leaned up against the window to create a poor man's amplifier), Pierce began weaving his own stories into the sounds of the mountains. Then 1990 happened, and the effects of the Seattle Sound would infiltrate and poison the purity of his songs, mixing to create some illegitimate child born of both worlds.

Jeff Santiago is a singer/songwriter based in Asheville, NC. Born in the Bronx, Santiago was given a guitar by his grandfather at an early age. He’d lock himself in his room with that guitar and his older brother’s record collection shaping his musical future.

Santiago moved to Los Angeles in 1997 where he was in several rock bands with regional success in southern California. There he also founded the acoustic rock band Rozinante. After two albums he relocated to Asheville where he continued to tour as a solo artist and gain regional success. He also joined the indie rock band The Broomstars.. Some of these Broomstars support him and make up Los Gatos Negros. They include Jason Daniello (guitar / vocals), a successful singer/songwriter in his own right, Clayton Jones (drums) and Jared White (bass). Both projects became a vehicle for discovering a region of the country new to him. “I’ve found so many new influences and experiences here in Asheville.” Santiago says, “The mountains, landscape and people are incredibly inspiring.”

Santiago y Los Gatos Negros is currently working on a new album to be released in early 2012.

	http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Sipe

Jeff Sipe, AKA “The Apartment Q-258″ was born in Berlin, Germany in 1959. Jeff’s family moved frequently in his youth while his father worked for the United States government. After a short stint in the D.C. area, Jeff’s family moved back to Germany. This is where Jeff learned to play drums while in junior high. In 1975, Jeff’s first stepping stone was attending the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music.

After two years of hard work Jeff’s dream finally came true when he was accepted to Berklee in 1977. While at Berklee, Jeff studied under Bob Kaufman and Bill Norine, he attended clinics given by Alan Dawson and was taken under by his mentor Lee Venters. Jeff was lucky enough to attend Berklee with an impressive cast of musicians like Branford Marsalis, Bill Frisell, Mike Stern and Jeff Watts, just to name a few. Jeff actually played in a wedding band with Victor Bailey and started his first fusion band with Steve Vai and Baron Brown. This experience turned Jeff on to a wide open world of music and gave him valuable tools that he still carries with him today.

After his stay in Boston, Jeff moved to Atlanta in 1983. There he began teaching at the Atlanta Institute for Music and at a popular hang out for Atlanta drummers, Atlanta Drums and Percussion. Jeff spent time sitting in with local musicians and was introduced to Bruce Hampton through Dan Wall, a keyboardist that he had been playing with…..and that’s the rest of the story. It seemed too fitting that their first meeting took place at a wedding because not only was there a marriage there was a wedding of vast musical intention. Jeff then asked Oteil Burbridge and Jimmy Herring to sit in on this free willed musical band wagon and the Aquarium Rescue Unit was born.

In 1996, Jeff met up with Swedish-born bass extraordinaire Jonas Hellborg and the Memphis guitar monster Shawn Lane. The result was an assimilation of conversational style fusion music which would turn out to be some of Jeff’s greatest musical moments. Over the years, Jeff has spent time on many projects. He has worked with Bryon Lopes, Neil Fountain, Chief Jim Billy, Jonathan Townes and John Medeski. Jeff even took on his own creation known as the Zambiland Orchestra. This experimental big band featured members of Phish, Widespread Panic, Michael Ray and the Cosmic Crew, the Derek Trucks Band, the Fiji Mariners and many others.

Even more recently Jeff teamed up with long time friend and guitar maniac Jimmy Herring on a project known as Z, that’s Project Z to most. Together with fellow Atlantian producer/musician Ricky Keller and mega organ/keyboardist Oliver Wells, Project Z recorded a self titled debut album filled with juicy fusionisk tunes that gathered praise from all realms. Since then a second Project Z has been released as well as Jeff’s solo release “Timeless” featuring Paul Hanson, Derek Jones, Jason Crosby, Kofi Burbridge, Count ‘M Butu and Derek Trucks. Jeff and his family now live in the North Carolina Mountains.

Jeff has also played with, toured with and or recorded with:

Bela Fleck, Phil Lesh, the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Mike Stern, Howard Levy, Neal Young, Stephen Stills, Percy Sledge, Felix Cavileri, Trey Anistasio Band, Sam Bush, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Joan Osborn, Jazz is Dead, Paul McCandles, Mike Kang, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams, Hellborg Lane Sipe, Greg Osby, Ike Stubblefield, Bruce Hampton, George Porter, Eugene Chadbourne, The Zambiland Orchestra, Grease Factor, The Pisgah Pickers, Paul Hanson, Project Z, Jimmy Herring Band, Jeff Coffin & The Mu’tet, The Apartment Projects, Craig Erickson, T Lavitz, Jeff Sipe Trio, Shannon Whitworth, Debashish Batacharya, Dan Wall, Taj Mahal, Waylon Jennings, Dell Mc Coury, Lucinda Williams, Art Lande, Shane Theriot, WZ, the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Adam Nitti, and many many more!
