On a cloudy sweaty late summer day, in the high ceiling 1890’s dining room at Krug’s house, upright bass player Kevin Lampson joined songwriter Alex Krug and violinist Ashley Cofield to play some music for the first time. This was the beginning if the Alex Krug Trio and the now evolved Alex Krug Combo. Over the course of time the introduction of other players has produced a most fun and effective combination of musicians. The striking vocals and emotive songwriting of Krug and the rhythmic multidimensional upright bass playing of Lampson are the core. Patrick Armitage (formerly of hip hop band Atmosphere) brings the beats on the drum kit, Stu Benjamin (Jarvis Jenkins Band) some licks on slide guitar as well as Lyndsay Pruett and others join the combo from show to show. The freedom in the instrumentation, inventiveness and skill allows them to push what is possible. They won Modaddy's Brown Bag Songwriter Contest. In November of 2010 the band put out their first audio release 'Live at Lexington Avenue Brewery' on Itunes. The recording showcases the trio's live performance style, which they’ve become, known for. This past winter the band released a 6 song self titled EP that was mastered in Boston by Will Holland who has mastered many accomplished artist's including the Pixies.
The combo can provide 2-3 plus hours of original Rock/Americana (woods Rock/Americana). The band has brought their sound into a variety of venues including, Lexington Ave Brewery, Modaddy's, One Stop, opening @ the Orange Peel, Westville Pub, The French Broad Chocolate lounge, Preservation Pub and Highland Brewing Company.
